How Lotus works

Lotus 2.3 is a start screen and command center for the macOS terminal. Everything below in one place.

Install

Paste one line into Terminal:

$ curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fanxy13/homebrew-lotus/main/install.sh | zsh

Or with Homebrew:

$ brew install Fanxy13/lotus/lotus
NeedsDetails
macOS 11 or newerApple silicon and Intel. Terminal.app shows all colors from macOS 26 on, older versions use 256 colors automatically.
zshThe default shell since macOS 10.15.
fastfetchInstalled automatically – it reads the system information.
OptionalHomebrew for /brew and /install, yt-dlp and ffmpeg for /convert, Java for /minecraft, Python 3.10–3.14 for /bg remove. Lotus offers to set them up when you need them. lotus doctor shows what is there.

Systems

Lotus runs on macOS (supported) and Linux (beta: tested in containers on Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 12, Fedora 42 and Arch). A native Windows version is in development and not available yet.

Linux

One line – no administrator rights, nothing outside your home folder:

$ curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Fanxy13/homebrew-lotus/main/install.sh | sh

The script checks the system, asks before it installs zsh (Lotus' engine) and shows the command first, downloads Lotus and fastfetch (checked against a pinned digest), and starts the setup. Lotus loads into zsh and bash; lotus setup adds its lines to the startup file of the shell you log in with (~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc), or both. In bash the /commands need version 4.4; the live now-playing lines under the start screen are zsh only.

What the programs of your distribution provide is asked for only when a command needs it, with the exact command, for apt, dnf, pacman, zypper and apk: jq, ffmpeg, yt-dlp, imagemagick, playerctl, bubblewrap (the plugin sandbox), Chromium or Chrome (so that the AI can look at pages it builds). A plugin that needs a sandbox is refused, never run without one, where bubblewrap cannot start.

The AI program is one static file. A release carries it for Linux (x86_64 and arm64), Lotus checks its sha256 against the digest it ships with and deletes a file that does not match. With the Swift toolchain installed, Lotus builds it itself.

Windows

In development: a native PowerShell 7 module for Windows 11 and Windows Terminal, installed with winget or Scoop. It is not in a release yet, so there is nothing to install and no command here.

Yes = tested on that system · Partly = works, with the limit named · Soon = being built · No = not possible there.

First start

The first time Lotus runs, a short setup walks through five steps in the Matcha colors, with a small lotus that opens a little more with every step – esc goes back, nothing is saved before Finish, and everything can be changed later:

  1. Welcome

The interface language: English, Deutsch, Français or Español. The page switches to the language you point at.

  2. You

Your name, one of 13 themes (the lotus takes the colors of the theme you point at), and whether Lotus shows up in every new Terminal window.

  3. Features

Which parts of Lotus to turn on – app launcher, Homebrew, web search, weather, AI terminal, music, visualizer, video downloads, iOS tools, Minecraft, Remove BG.

  4. Setup

Only for what you turned on: your weather city, connecting Claude, the Remove BG model and output folder.

  5. Review

Everything at a glance, then Back or Finish. On Finish the lotus opens all the way and its pollen writes Hello and your name.

Run it again any time with lotus setup. Updating from Lotus 1.x or 2.x keeps your settings and skips the setup.

Using Lotus

Commands start with a slash and work in every Terminal window. The full list is on the commands page and in the terminal with /lotus cheatsheet.

Forgiving

/weatr → “Did you mean /weather?”. App names, packages and shortcuts are matched the same way.

Links

Paste a link and press Enter – it opens in your browser. open Spotify opens apps.

Clean errors

Missing tools, no internet or a wrong input get a short explanation and a way forward instead of raw shell errors.

Settings

Type /settings. Arrow keys to move, Enter or ←→ to change, v to preview the start screen, q to close.

Features

Lotus is made of features you can turn on or off – in the setup, in /settings → Features, or with lotus features. The list comes from data/features.tsv, the same file the website reads.

Off means off

A feature that is off has no command, its settings are hidden, it downloads nothing and it adds nothing to the start of Lotus. Turning off Music also removes now playing from the start screen.

Easy to bring back

Its commands say that it is off and how to turn it on – or turn it on right there. The cheatsheet only shows what is on.

Scriptable

lotus features minecraft off, lotus features bg on. Without a terminal, lotus features prints the list.

Configuration file

Everything is stored in ~/.config/lotus/settings.zsh – plain text, one setting per line. Your own logo is ~/.config/lotus/logo.txt. Temporary data (weather, now playing) lives in ~/.cache/lotus.

settings.zsh

The AI terminal

Type /ai and the AI terminal opens: a chat you keep typing into – no /ai in front of every message. Ask questions, let it explain code, or let it work in the folder you started it in. lotus ai local puts a model on your Mac with Apple's MLX – no Ollama: it shows what fits your memory (Nucifera 20B – gpt-oss-20b tuned for Lotus, see nucifera-20b – Qwen3.6 27B, Qwen3-Coder 30B, Devstral Small 2, Qwen3 14B), downloads it once and loads it only while /ai runs. Like every model in /ai it can look at files, change them and run commands – as far as /permissions lets it.

Works on your Mac

It can list, read and search files, create and change files and run commands. Reading inside the folder happens right away; every change and every command is shown first and needs a yes. a allows the rest of the session, n lets you say what to do instead. In auto mode (⇧⇥) it only asks when Lotus is unsure. Never sudo.

Uses Lotus

Ask in plain words and it uses Lotus itself: open or install an app, the weather, music, the theme, the clock, keeping your Mac awake, turning features on or off, Minecraft servers, removing an image background. It only gets the tools of the features that are on, says when one is off, asks before it changes or installs anything, and only reports what really worked. One list for every AI: data/ai-tools.tsv.

Works in steps

A bigger task, or several in one message, starts with a short to-do list that the AI ticks off step by step – a checklist in the terminal and the web chat. It thinks about one step at a time instead of planning everything in its head, and when it stops with steps still open, Lotus sends it on to the next one.

Keeps going

When it stops before it is done – it ran out of room, only thought, or said what it would do next and stopped there – Lotus lets it go on by itself, at most three times per message, and says so. When it asks you something, it waits for you – unless it only asks whether it should do what you asked: then it is told to just do it.

Sees the pages it builds

When it builds a website it opens the page in a real browser (WebKit, like Safari) at desktop and phone width and sees errors in the console, files that did not load, what is too wide, missing alt texts and labels – and, with a CSS selector, the size, colors and font of any element. Claude also gets a screenshot. After every HTML, CSS or JS file it writes, Lotus looks at the page by itself. The page sees only its folder and cannot send anything away.

Knows what is new

It searches the web and reads pages – documentation, release notes, error messages, Wikipedia, Apple's developer docs – instead of guessing, and names its sources. Only the public internet: nothing on your Mac or in your network. What a page says is information for the AI, never an order.

Remembers

The conversation stays for an hour after your last message, also for single questions with /ai <question>. What matters for later – how you like answers, your projects – it keeps with remember; /memory shows it, /memory clear forgets it. A LOTUS.md, AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md in the folder tells it how to work there. /ai new or /clear starts fresh.

Better prompts

Turn on /enhance and the AI first rewrites your message into a clear prompt – goal, details, expected result – in your language, with every name, path and command kept. Shown before it is sent, or offered so you choose. Short messages, commands and long texts go as typed.

Thinks first

Claude thinks before it answers, Ollama models with a thinking mode too. Apple Intelligence decides whether a message needs files, plans the steps and checks that it really did them. Set the depth with /effort, in /settings or with the slider in the web chat – quick, balanced, thorough, maximum or ultra, where it also checks its work.

Inside the AI terminalWhat it does
/loginConnect Claude: opens the key page, paste the key once
/modelChoose who answers: Apple Intelligence, the model on this Mac, Claude Opus, Sonnet, Haiku or Fable, an Ollama model, your OpenAI-compatible API
/permissions · ⇧⇥What the AI may do on this Mac: ask first, or auto – it works on its own in the folder and asks only when Lotus is unsure (deleting, pushing, installing, sending data, other folders, private files, programs it does not know). Per kind: look at files, change files, run commands, search the web, use Lotus features – allowed, ask first or never; installing an app always asks. ⇧⇥ switches auto mode on and off. Also in /settings → AI
/memoryWhat the AI remembers about you from earlier conversations · /memory clear forgets it. The list is a plain text file you can edit
/effortQuick, balanced, thorough, maximum or ultra
/autoAuto mode on or off – it works on its own and asks only when unsure (the same as ⇧⇥)
/enhanceImprove your prompts before the AI sees them: off, on (shown and sent), or ask – ⏎ sends the improved one, o yours, esc nothing. Also in /settings → AI → Improve prompts
/context · /compactHow full the memory is · summarize now
/performanceThis session as a report in a .txt file in Downloads: the AI and its settings, the time and tokens of every step, how much came from the model's cache, where Lotus stepped in, and the logs – to improve the AI. The web chat downloads it
/statsWhat the web chat is doing right now – and its open question, which you can answer here – and what the AI did: answers, time working and thinking, steps by tool, answers per day. Live until q; also /ai stats
/clear · /copy · /exitNew conversation · copy the last answer · back to the shell
esc · ⌥⏎ · ↑Stop an answer · new line · earlier messages

Providers

/ai uses the first provider that works – or the one you pick with /model or in /settings. /ai status shows what is available.

Claude

The strongest choice for code and longer work. Type /login in the AI terminal (or lotus ai login): Lotus opens the key page, you paste the key once, Lotus checks it and keeps it in the macOS Keychain. You pay Anthropic for what you use.

Apple Intelligence

Runs on your Mac – nothing leaves it, free. Good for questions, texts and small file tasks. Needs macOS 26 or newer, Apple silicon and Apple Intelligence turned on.

Ollama

Local models. Install Ollama, open the app and download a model that can use tools, e.g. ollama pull qwen3.

OpenAI-compatible

Any service with an OpenAI-style API. Set the URL in /settings, the key with lotus ai key openai.

In your browser

/ai server start opens Lotus AI in your browser – a chat page that Lotus serves itself on this Mac, at http://127.0.0.1:3000. It is the same AI as /ai, not a second one: the same providers, instructions, Lotus tools and permissions. Answers stream in as they are written.

A real chat

Your conversations in a sidebar – new chat, history, clear, delete. Markdown, tables and code blocks with a copy button – Expand shows a block on the right, with line numbers, copy and download, and Open does the same for every file the AI wrote – and the steps the AI takes with what they returned. ⏎ sends, ⇧⏎ makes a new line. Works on a phone and a computer, in the colors of your theme.

Asks in the browser

Before it changes something the AI asks in the page, with a preview: yes, yes and don't ask again (for this conversation), no, or what to do instead. The rules of the terminal: reading runs, changes and commands ask unless you allowed them, installing always asks. Improved prompts are shown there too.

How hard it thinks

The bars next to the message box open a slider: quick, balanced, thorough, maximum, ultra. Ultra is Claude's highest effort; with every AI it also plans, checks its work and goes on longer when it stops early. The same setting as /effort.

Dares more

The Ask/Auto switch next to the message box, or "Yes, and switch to auto mode" in a question: it works on its own and asks only when unsure. Deleting, pushing, installing, private files and other folders still ask, and sudo never runs.

Commands

Type / for the commands of /ai: /help, /new, /clear, /model, /effort, /enhance, /auto, /permissions, /memory, /context, /stats, /performance, /compact, /copy. ↑↓ and ⇥ choose.

Settings

The gear: who answers, thinking, improving prompts, ask first or auto, what the AI may do, what it remembers. The same settings as /settings in the terminal – the port and other devices stay in the terminal.

Only this Mac

It listens on 127.0.0.1 and never starts by itself. /ai server open signs the browser in with your access key; without it the page stays locked. Other pages cannot use it, and your API keys never reach the browser.

Follow along

Like in Claude: its thoughts as they come, folded to the last lines – all of them with a click. Every step shows a spinner while it runs and how long it took. A line at the bottom says what it is doing right now, for how long and how many steps so far; the browser tab says it too.

Works without the page

The answer is written on your Mac, not by the page: close the tab and it works on – only the web chat has to run. Come back any time, from another device too: the page picks it up where it is, with the real times. The sidebar marks where it is working. The stop button or esc stops it.

Does not get stuck

The same step twice with nothing changed is not run again, and the third time the tools stop for that answer. Thinking that goes in circles or far too long is stopped and the AI is told to act. A long file is never replaced by a few lines – the AI is told to change only the part with edit_file.

Statistics

/ai stats, or /stats in /ai: what the web chat is doing right now, and its open question – answer it right there when no page is open. Below, answers, time working and thinking, steps by tool and answers per day. Only counts and times, never what was said.

CommandWhat it does
/ai serverStatus and a menu: open, start or stop, restart, statistics, port, start with the terminal, other devices
/ai server start · stop · restartStart it (it opens in your browser), stop it, start it again after a change
/ai server openOpen the page and sign in with your access key
/ai server statusRunning or off, the address and the folder it works in
/ai statsWhat it is doing right now and what it did, live until q: y a n answer its open question, x stops the answer
/ai server port 3001Another port (default 3000), kept in the settings. When a port is in use, Lotus says by which program and offers the next free one – it never changes it without asking

It works in the folder where you started it, like /ai. /settings → AI → "Web chat: start with terminal" starts it with the first terminal window – off unless you turn it on. "Web chat: other devices" lets your phone or another Mac in your network open it with the link that contains your key; that connection is not encrypted, so only turn it on in networks you trust.

The AI terminal is a small Swift program that Lotus builds once on your Mac (about 15 seconds; needs the Command Line Tools: xcode-select --install). Keys come from the Keychain or $ANTHROPIC_API_KEY / $LOTUS_AI_KEY and are never written to a file. /ai command only suggests a command – it never runs it.

Remove BG

/bg remove photo.jpg removes the background and saves a transparent PNG. It runs on your Mac: no cloud, no upload, no account – after the one-time download it works offline. /bg remove without a path shows a drop zone: drag images from the Finder into it, or press ⏎ to take the image in the clipboard. /bg paste does that directly – a screenshot, “Copy Image” from a browser, or files copied in the Finder. A folder processes every image in it.

BiRefNet445 MBBest quality: hair, fur, thin and fine edges
BiRefNet Lite178 MBFast and light – Auto uses it on Intel Macs and Macs with less than 8 GB
InSPyReNet368 MBLarge photos – keeps the aspect ratio on the GPU

Auto

BiRefNet on Apple silicon, BiRefNet Lite on Intel – and a model that is already downloaded always wins, so Auto never downloads a second one on its own. Apple silicon runs on the GPU (PyTorch MPS), with the CPU as fallback.

Installed when you use it

The first /bg remove shows what it needs – a Python environment with PyTorch (about 1 GB, once) and the model – and downloads only after a yes, into ~/.local/share/lotus. Every file is pinned and checked with SHA-256.

Never overwrites

photo.jpg becomes photo_no_bg.png, then _2, _3 … in your output folder: a Lotus folder in Pictures, next to the original, or any folder (/bg output). Full resolution, color profile kept.

Draw what you want to keep

Press r after the AI, or use --edit: a small window with brush, eraser, size, undo, redo, clear, reset, invert and preview. Painted areas always stay; their edges snap to the object.

Clean edges

The model's mask is refined along the edges of the photo, faint specks are removed, and edge colors are rebuilt without the old background – no halos around hair.

Clear errors

If something fails you see what happened, why and what to try, with an error ID such as BG-004. The details are in /lotus log. A failing GPU or model comes with an offer to use the CPU or another model.

Formats: PNG, JPG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF. /bg models downloads, checks and removes models. BiRefNet (Peng Zheng et al.) and InSPyReNet (Taehun Kim et al.) are MIT licensed – see THIRD_PARTY.md.

Image converter

/img convert turns images and whole folders into another format – with macOS' own image engine, on your Mac. It reads what Preview reads: HEIC from the iPhone, PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, PSD, SVG, JPEG XL and RAW photos. Without a path it shows a drop zone: drag images or a folder into it, or press ⏎ for the image in the clipboard. Then pick the format, the quality and the size, and the lotus blooms while it works – with each image's size before and after underneath.

zsh
$ /img convert ~/Desktop/Holiday --to webp --max 1920

    ◇ lotus / Image converter

  ✓ 60 images → WebP 35.1 MB → 4.2 MB (-87 %)
    Saved in ~/Desktop/Holiday/WebP
FormatGood for
JPEGPhotos, everywhere – small, no transparency (it becomes white)
PNGScreenshots and graphics – lossless, keeps transparency
HEICAbout half the size of JPEG – iPhone and Mac
AVIFThe smallest – modern browsers and apps
WebPWebsites – small, keeps transparency (needs cwebp: brew install webp)
TIFF · GIF · BMPPrint and editing · simple graphics · old programs
PDFA page for each image – to send or print
ICOAn icon for websites (favicon) – square, at most 256 px

The originals stay

An image gets its new file next to it, a folder gets a folder for the new format inside it – Holiday/WebP. Nothing is overwritten: photo (2).jpg.

The right way up

Photos are turned the way you took them – also in formats that do not know the camera's rotation, like WebP and AVIF. Camera data (date, camera, place) stays.

Smaller, never larger

Quality from 50 to 95 for JPEG, HEIC, AVIF and WebP, and a size limit from 640 px to 4K – an image that is smaller already keeps its size.

Fast

Several images at a time, as many as your Mac has performance cores. Ctrl-C stops between images and leaves no half file behind.

Without questions: /img convert <image|folder>… --to <format> --quality <1–100> --max <pixels>. /img formats shows what your Mac reads and writes. The converter is a small Swift program Lotus builds once with the Command Line Tools; without them it uses macOS' sips.

Live Server and /html

Type /liveserver in a project folder – in VS Code's terminal too. It serves the folder on this Mac – and to your phone in the same Wi-Fi – opens index.html or, when there is none, a menu of all its pages, and reloads the browser whenever you save a file. Change only CSS, and only the styles swap – the page keeps its place.

/liveserver

Only your Wi-Fi

This Mac and the devices in the same Wi-Fi – a device from another network gets no answer, and only the Mac's own names work. Nothing outside the folder, no hidden files like .git or .env.

Part of Lotus

Nothing to install: type /liveserver or /html. Python's standard library does the work. Turn both off with lotus features live off.

/html – your files as documents

/html turns your pages, style sheets and scripts as Word, PDF, Text, Markdown, OpenDocument or RTF. /html takes the page open in the browser, /html all puts every page, style sheet and script of the folder into a folder of their own – my-site/Word, my-site/PDF … As code, colored like in VS Code with the number of each line – or, for a page, what a visitor reads: headings, text, lists, tables, links and pictures.

/html the page open in the browser – or choose
/html all the whole folder
/html about.html pdf one file
/html css a folder, /html *.css a pattern
--page a page as a visitor reads it

Formats

Word (.docx), PDF, Text, Markdown, OpenDocument (.odt) and RTF – asked when you do not say. Text keeps the code byte for byte, for uploads that refuse .html.

Never over yours

The originals stay as they are. A document you changed is never written over – the new one gets "(2)"; the ones /html made itself are made again. Nothing leaves this Mac.

Pets

Up to three little pixel pets live in your terminal. Type a pet's name and it answers – with Apple Intelligence on your Mac, in your language and with its own personality. /pets adopts, renames and feeds them; /help lets your pet find the right command, and in /ai it sits in the welcome box and its face is the spinner. Everything about them – and the prompt to make your own – is on the Pets page.

CommandWhat it does
/petsYour pets: adopt, talk, feed, rename, personality, say goodbye, settings
mochi · mochi how was your day?A chat with a pet (⏎ on an empty line ends it) · one answer
/feed mochiFeed a pet – they get hungry after half a day
/zetamac · /zetamac 60 hardA math game like Zetamac: 120 seconds of mental arithmetic – every right answer feeds your pets
/help · /help allYour pet asks what you need and shows the commands · every command
lotus pets add [file]Add your own kind of pet (from the clipboard or a file)

Adopted pets are in ~/.config/lotus/pets.tsv, your own kinds in ~/.config/lotus/pets/, hunger and what they remember in ~/.local/state/lotus/. A pet's name only calls it when no command, alias or function has that name.

Clock and keep awake

/clock opens a full-screen clock in the colors of your theme. Six designs: minimal, big digits, a retro seven-segment display with faintly lit unused segments, Matrix rain that forms the digits, a round analog face drawn with braille dots, and a world clock with a day-and-night bar for every city. It uses your Mac's own clock and starts no background process.

Command or keyWhat it does
/clock · /clock retroThe clock in your last design · in a given one (minimal, big, retro, matrix, analog, world)
← → · 1–6Another design
s · z · qSeconds on or off · a second time zone under the clock · close
/caffeine on 90 · /caffeine off · /caffeineKeep your Mac awake for 90 minutes (0 = until you turn it off) · let it sleep again · status and a short menu

The design, seconds and the cities of the world clock are in /settings → Clock (time zones like Europe/Zurich). Keep awake uses macOS' own caffeinate: it keeps running when you close the terminal, ends by itself when the time is up, and the start screen shows it while it is on. Lotus only ever stops the caffeinate it started itself.

Log

/lotus log shows what Lotus did – commands, settings changes, downloads, installs, the AI's tool use, Remove BG stages and every error – with the time and the part of Lotus it came from.

CommandWhat it does
/lotus logThe viewer: f filter by level, / search, ⏎ details, l live, y copy, c clear
/lotus log level debugHow much is written: off, warn, info (normal), debug (detailed), trace (everything)
/lotus log live · lotus -V <command>Follow new lines · print the log while one command runs
/lotus log clear · /lotus log pathDelete the log · where the file is

The file is ~/.local/state/lotus/lotus.log, rotated at 1 MB and trimmed after the retention time (7 days by default). Keys, tokens and passwords are masked, your home folder is written as ~, and nothing leaves your Mac.

Update and uninstall

CommandWhat happens
lotus updateShows the installed and the newest version, then updates. Settings stay untouched.
lotus doctorChecks macOS, zsh, fastfetch, colors, ~/.zshrc, the optional tools, Remove BG (Python, PyTorch, MPS, models, output folder, editor), the log and the features.
lotus uninstallAsks first, then removes Lotus, its settings, AI memory and saved AI keys, the log, the Remove BG models, cache and the lines in ~/.zshrc. Also in /settings.
brew uninstall lotusFor Homebrew installs. Keeps your settings; add --zap to remove them too.

Privacy and security

No accounts, no tracking

Lotus has no server. It only goes online for what you ask: weather (Open-Meteo), updates (GitHub), downloads you confirm.

Nothing runs behind your back

Installs, downloads and deletions are shown first and need a yes – the AI's file changes and commands too. Lotus never runs sudo and never stores passwords or Apple ID details.

Checked input

Links must be http or https, package names and city names are validated, and shortcuts cannot run shell commands.

Trusted sources

Apps come from Homebrew Cask, Minecraft servers from Mojang or PaperMC (checksums verified), iOS tools from their official releases, Remove BG models from their authors – pinned and checked with SHA-256.

Images stay on your Mac

Remove BG reads and writes local files only. No cloud API, no upload; dropped paths are never run as commands.

The web chat stays home

/ai server listens on 127.0.0.1 only and needs your access key (a file only you can read). It answers only to its own address, checks a token on every request and where every change comes from, and never sends API keys to the browser. Conversations stay in ~/.local/state/lotus/ai-chats.

Pets talk on your Mac

Pets think with Apple Intelligence on the device; what you tell them and what they remember stays in ~/.local/state/lotus. A pet file is only read as data – its drawings keep plain ASCII and block characters.

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix

Wrong colors/settings → Color mode → 256 colors.
No logoThe window is too narrow – Lotus switches to the minimal logo, then none. Make the window wider.

The web chat says the port is in useSay yes to the free port Lotus offers, or choose one: /ai server port 3001.
The web chat page is lockedOpen it from the terminal: /ai server open – the link signs you in.
A command says its feature is offlotus features or /settings → Features.
Remove BG failsThe error screen shows an ID and what to try. Details: /lotus log. Checks: lotus doctor.
Anything elseRun lotus doctor, look at /lotus log, and open an issue on GitHub.
